While the only way to learn how to really dominate the table in online poker gaming is to play a lot, there are a number of key things to remember to get your strategies in place and be able to keep your cool under pressure.
1 – Not every hand needs to be played!
Not every hand is a winner and not every hand can be bluffed well either. It is not a problem to fold a few times to then have a chance at winning a big pot. Your position in the game will also affect this as early positions have much less options than later positions. Take your time and throw away those dud hands.
2 - Betting the Flop
The next thing to remember is not betting on every flop. The flop is the decider on your hand and will determine whether it is a possible winner or a dud. If your hand at this stage does not have much potential such as a top pair or a straight or flush you should fold if someone else leads out and bets ahead of you. If your hand looks good on the flop then you need to bet it. Play the odds, don’t hope for a miracle!
3 - Be Careful with Your Blinds
This relates to the first tip as well. Just because you have money in the game does not mean you should play every hand. Committing to a weak hand can end in disaster and end up costing you more than what you would have lost if you have just folded in the blinds! It takes some courage to do this but if you think with a long term strategy folding early is not always a bad thing when the rewards are greater elsewhere.
4 - Betting the Turn
Bet on the turn if you have a good hand and believe it to be the best on the table. Too many players hold out in the hopes of something even better in the river but the chances of someone drawing out on you increase. If you get re-raised after a turn bet you may already have lost and you should consider throwing your hand away. Also if you still do not have a good hand on the turn you may want to fold on any bet as you will probably be throwing money away if you are trying for a straight or flush for instance.
5. Betting the River
You can still make mistakes on the river. You can call a losing bet or you can fold a winning one. If you have any chance of winning the hand then you almost always want to call. The River is also the opportunity to bluff at the pot, but you better be sure your opponent is weak before throwing money in the pot.
Armed with this knowledge you can go on to perfect other techniques such as deception and other more subtle and complex strategies! However at it’s core you have to look at the stats and the numbers and the odds. As the saying goes; Ya gotta know when to hold em and when to fold em.
Good luck!
